Dudhsagar Falls in the state of Goa, India

Dudhsagar Falls is one of the main sights of the state of Goa in India. After reading lots of reviews, we decided to get to Dudhsagar Falls on our own by scooter.

Dudhsagar Falls: how to get there by scooter

The scooter ride from South Goa to Dudhsagar Falls takes about 2 hours. The road itself is not difficult at all, and not interesting at all either. Once there, we headed straight into Dudhsagar National Park. The road to the waterfall fords 3 small streams, and as of 2015 the hardest to cross was the first one. We made it across safely, rode up to the park checkpoint and found out that we, and any private vehicle, could go no further. It turns out that since 2015 entry is banned for private vehicles on park grounds — only tourist jeeps are allowed. It was rather annoying — why couldn't they have put up an information sign before the first river…

The only way left to get there was the tourist jeeps, and their hire office was nearby. In May 2015 the cost of hiring a jeep was 2400 rupees. It works out cheapest to go 6 people at a time — that comes to 400 rupees per passenger. The price includes the ticket to Dudhsagar National Park. Life jackets have to be rented separately — 40 rupees each.

The ride to the waterfall takes about an hour through the national park, on a very bad road. The scenery along the way is quite beautiful. From the spot where the jeeps park, it is another 15 minutes or so on foot to the waterfall itself. On the way to the waterfall we stopped at Devil's Canyon — a small gorge with great depth — 50 meters.

Along the way you meet plenty of cheeky monkeys — keep an eye on your things.

Unfortunately, just as with Jog Falls, we did not go in the rainy season, so the waterfall was not as beautiful as it is at its best.

Still, after an hour in a stuffy jeep, a swim in the cool fresh water of the waterfall was an unreal pleasure.

To sum up, getting to Dudhsagar Falls on your own by scooter is easy. It's a pity they stopped letting vehicles into the park, but even so, this way still costs less than buying a tour from Goa.
