Venice: houses right in the water
On October 2, 2024, we arrived in Venice. You can't get to the island part of the city by car, so we left ours at a special parking lot and went on by water bus. Here it's called the vaporetto, and it's the main public transportation of island Venice: buses and cars don't go any farther than the edge of the city.

For some reason we thought there would be at least some kind of sidewalk between the houses and the water. But no: the houses here really do stand right in the water. You step out the door, and there's the water right away; only some entrances have small docks.

Even the ambulance in Venice is a boat.
A labyrinth
We spent just one day in Venice, and it turned out to be the most unusual city we have ever seen. It is made up of labyrinths of narrow streets and canals, and sometimes the streets lead out onto small squares. The narrowest lanes we came across were three paving stones wide.

Shops with carnival masks are on every corner here.

Evening
At dusk the windows lit up, and by the canal a little shop was open right on a boat.

Leia stood staring at a shop window where a clown was riding a little car behind the glass.

On October 3, we left Venice and drove on toward Rome.
